I learned most of these ABC’s through the school of hard knocks. My suggestion? Clip the list and slip it into a graduate’s congratulation card, right behind the cash. The money will be quickly spent, but the advice will last a lifetime. My ABC’s of Life:
Authenticity – Give yourself permission to be real and do what you want do for a living, rather than what “they” think.
Baby Steps – The bite-size tasks you must take to realize the overall big goal. Focusing on one step at a time will keep you from being overwhelmed.
Confidence – Recognize you have unlimited potential when it comes to what you can achieve, all it takes is the right attitude and confidence. Start with believing in your own self-worth.
Discouragement – Those negative voices in our head telling us that we aren’t good enough or smart enough must be tuned out if you are going to turn your dreams into reality.
Excellence – Be your best, highest self; for you, your family, employer and your community. People are counting on your talents and leadership.
Fear – Feel the fear and do it anyway. It’s what sets us apart from the animals.
Get Healthy – Sleep, exercise, meditate, and fuel your body. Get your mind, body and soul in an optimum state so you have the energy to fire on all cylinders.
Hope – Become a hopeaholic and expect good things. Don’t let anyone squash your dreams, including yourself.
Inspiration – Read inspiring stories, watch inspiring movies. Stay away from the news and reality crap shows. What doesn’t lift us up, tears us down.
Jellyfish – Don’t be that person who doesn’t take responsibility for the decisions they’ve made in their lives and then complain about how miserable they are. Nobody likes that person.
Kindness – Yes be kind to others, but what about being kind to ourselves? Stop being your worst critic, be patient with yourself and most importantly, learn to forgive yourself quickly.
Let Go – There are no awards given for being the Queen of Everything.
Masterminds – Everyone needs a team of supportive people to share your dreams, provide advice and constructive feedback. Get one.
Network – Get out in the community in which you work, live and play. Make a difference. Build authentic relationships. 85% of jobs are found through networking.
Objective – Goals lead to purpose which leads to passion which leads to happiness. Got goals?
Promote – As in self promote. You are a walking, talking billboard of Y.O.U. Inc. What’s your personal brand? Not sure how to create one, google BrandCamp University.
Quicksand – The sinking feeling of despair when you have no plan for your career and life. You must ask for help to pull yourself out, otherwise you will drown alone.
Replenish – One weekend a month unplug from all technology. You might even sit in stillness long enough to listen to the whispers of your soul and hatch your next big goal.
Strategy – Only applying for jobs online is not a successful strategy. Revisit Networking.
Tinker – Unsure about a career switch? Test drive it as a hobby, job shadow or volunteer.
Underdog – Life is not fair. Your success will be measured by your ability to rebound from setbacks.
Vision – “When you visualize, then you materialize. If you have been there in your mind, you’ll go there in the body”. – Denis Waitley.
Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda – Regrets will eat away at your heart. Take the risk, it’s worth it.
XL – The amount of courage you’ll need to take the path less travelled.
Yin/Yang – Sun/rain, joy/pain, love/fear, highs/lows. Just remember, everything is temporary.
Zero – What will happen if you don’t learn how to ask for what you want. Nothing.
What I’ve also learned? I will never stop learning. Enjoy the lessons presented to you each and every day. So far I’m carrying a B+ average and that’s cool with me…
